Sources and method

Ards and North Down council area. Every figure carries its own date.

People, crime and public money: sources

Annual population estimates by age, 1991–2025

ONS, NRS and NISRA via Nomis

Official source →
Method and retained evidence

Published annual mid-year population estimates, both sexes. Exact requested ONS area code; source geography vintage retained. Latest revised source series is used throughout; no years are interpolated and no ward values are inferred.

Open Government Licence v3.0

The download includes 3 source response receipts, with dates and content hashes.

2011 Census ethnic group — KS201UK

UK census offices via Nomis

Official source →
Method and retained evidence

Direct official census counts for the exact requested geography code. Native table category labels retained. Shares use this table’s own total; privacy-adjusted cells may not sum exactly to that total. The 2011 UK table retains its own category structure, including a separate Traveller category. It is not automatically comparable with later national census categories or modern district boundaries.

Open Government Licence v3.0

The download includes 3 source response receipts, with dates and content hashes.

Census 2021 MS-B01: Ethnic group

Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency

Official source →
Method and retained evidence

First count table only in the LGD and NI worksheets. Shares calculated using All usual residents in the same row. Northern Ireland’s 2021 native ethnicity categories are retained. Counts are for current Local Government Districts, not reconstructed historical districts. Different tables can differ slightly because of census privacy protection.

Open Government Licence v3.0

The download includes 1 source response receipt, with dates and content hashes.

Disposable household income, 1997–2024

Office for National Statistics

Official source →
Method and retained evidence

Published ONS table values from one 1997–2024 release, matched by exact source geography code. Table3 per-person values are retained, not recalculated from rounded totals. Source country/region references are the official published totals, not averages of selected councils.

Open Government Licence v3.0

The download includes 4 source response receipts, with dates and content hashes.

GDP deflators, September 2026 national accounts

HM Treasury

Official source →
Method and retained evidence

Official downloadable statistical returns; retained raw bytes verified by SHA-256.

Open Government Licence v3.0

The download includes 1 source response receipt, with dates and content hashes.

Local Government Auditor’s Report 2026, Appendix 4: council expenditure

Northern Ireland Audit Office

Official source →
Method and retained evidence

Expenditure column from the lower table on printed page48, in cash £million. This is the auditor’s council comparison; it is not net spending after service income, and is not all public spending in Northern Ireland.

The download includes 3 source response receipts, with dates and content hashes.

How to read this evidence

Dates and area boundaries matter. A council-area total is not automatically a city total. Missing observations stay missing; they are never treated as zero.

A city identity and its wider local authority are different geographies. Shared-authority cities reuse the same authority evidence and must display its full scope.

Missing/suppressed/failed observations remain null with a reason; they are never replaced by another city or zero.

Survey, census, administrative records and population estimates retain distinct evidence types.

Scottish crime counting rules and annual periods differ from Police UK street-level mapped crime. No common UK ranking is produced.

Census periods differ between nations: England/Wales and Northern Ireland 2021, Scotland 2022.

Source checking and automated validation are not independent analytical review or AQuA certification.

How the neighbourhood and trend findings are calculated

Interpretations are derived from the same official figures supplied in this package; no alternative figures are typed into the page.

Ward contrasts require matching source, measure, period, units and boundary vintage. Ranges describe only wards with available comparable figures; no mean of ward percentages is calculated.

Differences between percentages are percentage points. Neighbourhood comparisons are descriptive, not causal claims, personal risk scores or proof of service performance.

Recent changes require an observation from exactly one year earlier. Long-run comparisons retain their actual endpoints and source definition; cash housing values are not adjusted for inflation.

Proposed responses and delivery questions are analysis, not a claim that a council has approved funding, adopted a policy or completed work.

How the nearest cities are selected

The three nearest other official UK cities, measured in a straight line between the official representative place points, not by road or ferry distance. Cities across national borders are included. The same council area is not counted twice. These are geographical neighbours, not a ranking of similar economies or services. Each figure is compared only when its period, definition, unit and source are compatible. The national reference is the origin city's own nation, not an average of the selected cities.

The comparison uses the council areas named beside each figure. Distances are between official city location points, not road distances. Missing or incompatible figures stay visible with an explanation.

See the local and national comparisons →

This work follows principles from the AQuA Book: transparent sources, proportionate checks, uncertainty and reproducible calculations. Automated and agent checks are not independent analytical assurance or certification.

Interpretations and proposals are labelled separately from official commitments. Source-change monitoring produces review candidates; it does not automatically approve publication.

Known publication issues and August 2026 data changelog

Police forces / Home Office data.police.uk · Open Government Licence v3.0

Checked 2026-10-17. Global no-crime-data notices and missing latest-month crime reports suppress complete-period comparisons. Historical missing-crime notices are tracked chronologically until an explicit later crime refresh covers that month. Unresolved historical notices preserve observed rows but block trend interpretation. Stop-and-search and outcomes notices are not treated as crime omissions. UK Facts separately flags unexplained source discontinuities without asserting their cause.

NISRA Urban Settlements: official NIHE GIS representative points

Statistics keyed to N09000011 cover the Ards and North Down authority area. They must not be described as the built-up city alone. City, parish, settlement and electoral-ward boundaries are separate geographies.

Map point coordinates identify the place for navigation; the marker does not define the area covered by a statistic.

Northern Ireland Census 2021 electoral-ward statistics use NISRA methodology and may be approximated from Data Zones; District Electoral Areas and wards are different geographies.
